The Diversity House Youth Club lasted three days in July; each day with a variety of activities for the children to enjoy.

Tuesday 25th July

The kids had a trip to London touring the Black Cultural Archives, and a tour of the library and went deep into the vaults of the archives and then off to enjoy the sights and aromatic smells of Brixton Market. They set out at 9am from Sittingbourne train station and we must say the kids seemed to enjoy that and were excited for the rest of the day. The children loved the expeditions, learning about the history of Africans in UK at the Black Cultural Archives. The day ended at 6pm.

Wednesday 26th July

There was group discussion on the past day’s activities and on healthy eating/lifestyle and then off to the cinema to see Despicable Me 3.

Thursday 27th July

This was a fun day at the park, playing ball and interacting with other children as well as one another. After the park, the kids came back to lunch and a disco at Phoenix House. This was extremely fun as they all got to pick at least one song and either teach other’s their routine or have a group dance. There were prizes won for great participation. Some people even went as far as giving solo dances which were extremely entertaining. We started the disco with “Shape of You” and ended the day with, as we all guessed, the hit song “Despacito” as well as “Juju on the Beat” which the kids thought was the perfect end to a wonderful couple of days.

There was a lot of great feedback from the kids (who if I may add kept trying to convince us to “just carry on with youth club”) but the ones that stood out included;

  • “It was fun visiting the black archives. I’d like to write a book about Black History…I loved the disco and seeing other people’s taste in music”
  • “I enjoyed going to the museum…it inspired me a lot”
  • “I gained a lot of knowledge this week. It was exciting taking pictures and talking about healthy eating”
  • “I have learnt more about African culture…It was an enjoyable adventure which opened my eyes to new things.”
