Summit on Blood Pressure

and Blood Sugar.

On the 14th of June, 2009, we held a summit on Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar among BME Communities. We offered free information and advise to boost knowledge on prevention and management of these silent but very serious conditions. More>

According to Diabetes UK, "Differences in diabetes prevalence are evident in minority ethnic populations, particularly South Asian communities living in the UK. Type 2 diabetes tends to develop around five years sooner in people from African Caribbean and Asian backgrounds and prevalence of the condition is at least five times higher amongst these communities and may be higher. There is also increasing evidence of Type 2 diabetes in children, particularly in South Asian populations."

Special Interest Group on Black Asian & Minority Ethnic (BAME) Communities Health and Social Care Issues

Diversity House is a voluntary organisation working on empowering community groups, particularly those with a Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) background. Located in the Borough of Swale, Diversity House is currently implementing a project supported by the South East Coastal Communities project (SECC – University of Kent at Canterbury, Christ Church University and University of Greenwich) that will demonstrate new ways of promoting
health and well-being amongst Black Asian & Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities.

The project called ‘Special Interest Group (SIG) on BAME Health and Social Care Issues’ has as a general purpose to contribute to the advancement of knowledge on equality and diversity issues.  In the context of the SIG project, we will be implementing health summit on cardio-vascular disease risks amongst BAME communities.

The summit that will take place on 14th June 2009 will bring together different BAME communities and health and social care practitioners with the purpose of raising awareness about cardio-vascular disease risk.
