Alexis Wright (Regional Adviser, Equality & Human Rights Commission) will visit Diversity House on 29th July 2009 from 12.00 to 3.00pm to give a presentation on the new equality bill.

Alexis has been working in the field of equality for 10 years. She has been involved in peer education projects covering race and LGBTT issues in the Devon area involving over 200 young people. She has also worked with her Local Authority to implement their race equality scheme and providing training to councillors.

During her time at the CRE she hosted workshops for South East Youth workers on race equality and young people and contributed to the CRE's roundtable event for Gypsies and Travellers.

In the new Commission she expanded her work to include research on Violence Against Women, the Police and Community Engagement and the new Grants Programme.

Christine Locke wins BME Award 2008

CHRISTINE LOCKE, Chair of Diversity House has been recognised for her work as a promoter of community cohesion through her charity Diversity House based in Swale.

CHRISTINE LOCKE, BME Winner: "We provide bespoke services such as advice, information, guidance, advocacy on different community issues like housing education, immigration referrals, domestic violence. It’s really important because the world is so small now, everybody’s talking about globalisation and different people are coming together and if we do not provide services like that to find people that feel excluded – once people feel excluded and on the edge of the community there'll be tensions. So we try to work towards addressing social inequalities and reducing tensions."
